have a 1000 sq ft slab house i bought cheap to fix up and rent or sell have it gutted no interior walls right now. need to decide which way to go with the heating system, dont really need air conditioning as we can see Lake Superior from the house and that keeps us cool in the summer, but it gets very cold here in the winter. am thinking about some kind of radiant ceramic electric heating, our average cost per KW right now is 6 to 7 cents, most people here go with naturaul gas, but i think for this house it may be better to go with something simpiler and hopefully less expensive, so long story short, i need some help and feedback on this.

Hi there.

My name is Adam and I'm a first time home owner (700sqft bungalow with an unfinished basement) about to turn 31. I don't know a whole lot about renovating but I've managed to come this far without blowing the house up. I've built some fences, knocked down an interior wall, plastered a new wall, lay vinyl tiles, lay carpet, built a captains bed and lay trim. I'd say I had the most difficulty building the wall out of plaster. :)

Found this forum because I am looking into building rooms in my basement and trying to maximize sq footage in the house so I can get a bedroom down there for my teenage son and expand my living room to the entire width of the house. So future plans are:
-Finishing basement
-Knocking down walls
-Updating a bathroom
-Building storage areas
-Eventually adding an extension
-Replacing windows
-Installing crown moulding and chair rail
-Laundry chute

So since I didn't take many shop classes and pretty much have gotten by with common sense and the internet I thought i would join a forum where there may be people who can tell me how to do it. I love forums. I purchased a 50+ yr old boat on a whim and joined a boating forum. without those guys I would never have been able to complete the project. the internet is a wonderful thing :)

Glad I found this site.
I'm in Sonoita AZ and have owned and operated a home maintenance and repair ( handyman service) company for about 15 years. Married 18 years and have two beautiful and intelligent daughters. I recently closed the doors of the business to go back to school to finish my degree and certification to teach. I'm hoping to eventually get into an industrial arts shop or a woodshop at the high school level . I'm still working with long time clients on a part time basis, and am trying to focus more on custom woodwork and furniture refinishing. I also do a bit of small enine and MC/ ATV work. I attended a tech school (MMI) about 18 years ago, and still love to play with motorcycles. Offroad and ATVs only. a lot of locals have found out that I'm working on ATVs so there seems to be a pretty steady stream lately.
We have a 45 acre farm that is a constant source of repair challenges. From plumbing to barn costruction and everything inbetween. It keeps me pretty busy...........constantly. Our daughters put in a lot of elbow grease so it's definitely a family affair. Even woodcutting is a family event.
Well...... it's good to find this site and i suppose I will end up losing another hour a day to sitting at the computer. I gotta' go out and get busy.
