I'm replacing a west-facing slider and west window. It can get extreme heat, not much cold. I've done a lot of reading online, but still not sure what the best frame is and if it really makes that much difference.

Got an estimate from Anderson Windows. They use a composite which looks and feels good. But they're kind of expensive.
I've also read that vinyl is not that great for high heat.
Opinions/thoughts?

Check out Atrium doors.
Unless your will to pay more your going to get a junk door.
It's as if not more important how that door gets installed. If it's not properly flashed at the bottom, and the threshold gets fully supported it's going to leak and fail.
Not sure where you heard vinyl is not good in heat, just not true.
I hate any aluminum framed anything, unless there built with a thermal break in the frame.
Aluminum transfers the heat and cold to the inside.
