We are rebuilding a house from scratch, gutted the whole thing, so options are open. There are a few place I am not sure what size to use. One in particular is in a small den where I know I will be using a futon on the west wall. I do want a window behind it because I want to west sun ( it is covered by a porch.)
Should the window sill come above the back of the futon or below it?

Gregg, TY so much for your reply. This is a very small private room for me off the bedroom. The space for the futon is only 7 1/2 feet .
I am certain that there would always be a couch or something to sit on in that spot. We would center the window on the small wall.
I understand the things you have mentioned which are great! We have thought of nothing but windows for months so appreciate your advice!

Hi Vicki,
Don't know if you are getting a permit for the project but
your local building/planning department will probably have
at least minimum requirements for natural lighting in your various rooms
that could provide guidelines.

If you need help with the design I would check with a local
college that has an architecture department. There are many students
in need of projects that would be willing to draw up plans at a
very affordable price.

Thanks doorguy for the advice. We have the plan. I was just wondering if the sill of the window should come above or below the top of the futon. I appreciate everyone's time!

Got it Vicki,
It's probably just personal preference...
I would opt for more window rather than less.

Another thing to consider is whether or not you want
to display cool small things on your window sill.
We made our window sill trim wider to do just that.
