Foil backed drywall and vapor barrier
I'm working on my kitchen and I removed some drywall. My drywall is foil backed and I'm not able to find any locally. How do I seal a poly vapor barrier to the existing drywall. Removing the entire wall of drywall is not really an option.

You may/not need a true Class 1 vapor barrier. Years ago (when your foil faced drywall was installed) we thought everyone needed a vapor barrier. Now, depends on the siding drainage, exterior insulating board, and location. Check the map and read if vapor retarder or barrier is required: http://www.buildingscience.com/documents/information-sheets/info-sheet-310-vapor-control-layer-recommendations/
If needed, just put it on the wall under the new drywall sections as a vapor barrier is "area weighed" unlike an air barrier: http://www.greenbuildingadvisor.com/blogs/dept/building-science/air-barrier-or-vapor-barrier-building-science-podcast Gary |
