Consider the type of customer that fits your business. If they are the coupon clipping type then make the move.

I have found that doing quality work and referrals are the best advertising

Website, mailings to past customers, lettered truck & job signs. Just some of the basics you should be doing.

We use local flyers

I've found local flyers or gazettes are a better use of money. They target the demographic you are looking for and are cheaper than the news paper.

Different trade, but I ran an ad in a local paper for 2 years. Every time I got a new customer, I would ask where they got my name. It was always a referral from another customer. Not one got my name from an ad.
Also, if you put your name on your vehicle, make sure you have commercial insurance. Regular vehicle insurance won't usually cover an accident if they can tell you are using your vehicle for a business.
