exterior paint rusty nails
We had a 'professional' painter paint our house 2 years ago and only used one coat of spray after he sanded the 100 years of paint off....(lead is an issue currently being addressed). The nail holes did not get covered and now have rust from the nails showing through. The Seattle rains have arrived. what should I do.?
Hire a better painter would be one idea;),
But if you mean a way to fix it up yourself you could spot prime the nail heads. They will just keep getting worse until the rust runs down the house.
One way to do it is to cut a small hole in a piece of cardboard, slightly bigger than the rusty nail heads, and use it for a shield. Put the hole over each nail, and shoot it with a spray can of rust inhibiting primer like Rustolem. Then you could touch them up with regular paint and it would not come through.
Rusting nails can happen after sanding if the heads don't get primed. The protective coating on the nail head gets sanded off, and the moisture in the paint starts the rusting process.
