Painting Cheap Wood Panels

My Mother wants to paint some cheap wood paneling she has.

It's the slick, cheap kind.

Is it doable? What is the procedure for getting paint to stick to it?

Years ago I textured, primed and painted some crappy paneling and it turned out quite well. Couldn't tell you how long it lasted but it was fine the couple years I was there.

Scuff it, wipe it down, prime it and paint it. If it looks like it will have adhesion or bleed through issues go with an oil primer like Zinsser's Cover Stain, if not prime with a wb product like Zinsser 123. You could do a test spot with the 123 let it cure and give it the scratch test, more than likely it will not be a problem but I can't see the surface. Also tint your primer to your desired color.

Take before and after pics and post em here.

I am looking to do this myself. I was told to kilz it first with the water based stuff.
I'm concerned about the casual scratch lifting the latex topcoat.
