Painting over dark red paint

OK I would like to paint my kitchen which is dark red and I will be going to a light green. What is the best way to get the best coverage and not break the bank?

The red is about 4 years old now and is still in great shape. Should I prime then paint? Should I just do a few coats? Should I buy that paint/primer in one stuff? I will likely just go to the big box store to get the paint so my options are limited.

If it was me I would scuff sand it and then prime it with primer that is tinted to your desired color. Then two to three topcoats depending upon how well your primer covered. Two will probably get it but depending upon the red you are covering it can have challenges.

What sheen is the topcoat going to be?

Post some pics.

Probably a semi-gloss like it is now.

Primer or not scuff sand the walls for adhesion and covering semi I would prime.

I will prime, what kind should I use?

I'd use a bonding primer over that semi-gloss. Something that will stick, like Zinsser 123 primer. My first choice would be PPG Seal grip, but thats if you can find it though.

I like seal grip as well, but it won't be found in the box stores, so that leaves two votes for zinsser 123.

There is a fix for that.
Don't shop for paint @ the box store:rolleyes:

Now that I didn't get to this over the weekend I can go to the local paint store so my options are better.

+1 for the 1-2-3. I use a lot of it and you can find it just about everywhere.
