Painting Trim

Is the trim supposed to be painted the same color as the walls, the accent wall, or a different color altogether?

It depends, but most of the time it's painted an accent color.

What type of trim is it?

It's just flat running board.

I painted it the same color as the walls. It looks dull.

If you are referring to baseboards, that is usually done in a lighter accent color, and with a gloss or semi-gloss finish, which cleans easier. Most walls are done in a flat paint, in order to hide imperfections. This again is all relative to your own tastes and likes.

Colors and sheen are all a matter of preference for the customer or HO. For walls I prefer a egg finish on the walls and a satin or semi on the trim of contrasting colors.

Painting is not only makes your wall look fancy but basically it is used to protect your wall from so many other factors like leakage of water from wall and so many others. But a good quality paint and coating is very important to use.
