PVA Drywall primer

What does the PVA Drywall primer have in it that is so much better then regular paint or primer?

I was having a few beers with a buddy last night and he runs a hardware store and insists there is not much difference between a primer and a flat paint, but swears there is something special about the drywall primer so I figured I would come to the pros and ask you guys.

The difference (IMO) is that it is crap, stick to regular primer for new drywall

PVA has more clay in it. While I usually agree with Chrisn, on this subject I don't think it is crap, it is made to prime new drywall and it seals it better than flat paint but it is in no way meant to replace traditional primers but for drywall it works fine and is only used for unpainted drywall not trim or anything of that nature. Primers obviously seal the wall better and is better for repairs and single rooms but if you were building a new house from the ground up PVA serves a purpose.

I know. Truth be told I don't use much of it these days either but when I was 90% NC I bought a fair amount.
