Hello was planning on building a built in closet. I knew there was a stud in the wall just want to make sure this is not load baring first.

Hello, it is hard to tell by the picture. Best way to figure it out if it is load baring or not is that wall running perpendicular to your roof trusses? Load baring is if the wall under the floor joists or roor trusses is supporting the "load". If so then yes, it is load baring. If not you can do as you like. Even if it is load baring you can install a "header" above it to carry the load. Hope this helps!

Looks as if it was an alcove at one time. Look inside the opening above for the stud to be nailed to the bottom of the plaster opening there. If so, just remove the stud and cut back the plaster at the sides to the inside jamb openings. IF not, find out why that chase is there. Does it have a floor with flooring?
