Needs suggestion for fixing improperly installed duct grill

Hi there,

I'm a relatively newbie when it comes to home repair and improvement, but I'm quickly learning to be handy and have done basic things (eg. painting, patching dry wall, etc).

Recently moved into a home where the duct grill in the basement ceiling wasn't installed properly and was taped. When I removed the grill, it appears that nails on either side of the grill are unable to latch onto the ceiling because the ceiling dry wall is broken or too short.

I've attached pictures to clarify.

Any suggestions on how to fix this? It keeps falling whenever the fan in the HVAC is on overnight.

Thanks!

You have a metal boot above the drywall that have 90 degree bend of
metal on top of the drywall. You might have to get a piece of metal
3"x3". bend about 3/4" at 90 degree. Put the 3/4" up against the drywall at each end of the boot and let the other 2-1/4" go up inside the boot. Drive screws through the metal into the boot.
now you have new metal to put your reg. screws in. You might have to drill them to put the screws in. Later paul
