Default Question on wall repair/refinish...

Hello all!

I am looking to refinish the walls in one of my bedrooms. The wall is gyp board with about an 1/8" thick layer of plaster skim coat finished in a swirl pattern. With the house being close to 50 years old and several people having lived there, needless to say there are a lot of patched areas that don't look all that good.

My question is this...is there a method to removing the swirls or refinishing over top of them to create a smooth wall finish? The walls have been painted several times as well if that makes a difference or not?

If so what do I use and how difficult of a task is it to do for a 10x11 room? I have done some work in the past with drywall and joint compound as far as mudd and taping seems etc.

The other option I thought of was to overlay new 1/4" drywall on top of the existing walls but was hoping for a different way.

Thanks for any insight!!
