Removing crown molding
 

I plan on adding another layer of dry wall to a shared wall. I have crown molding on that wall and one contractor has told me that removing the crown molding would crack the drywall. The contractor told me I would be better off building another wall.

Is there a safe way to remove crown molding?

Just call another contractor.
