Musky smelling rugs

Used a carpet cleaner on them. Now, 48 hours later, they smell AWFUL. I mean terrible. I also used the same carpet cleaner on my rooms with carpet and those turned out fine.
How can I eliminate that awful odor from the rugs?

Did you change the water while you were cleaning?

Also, did you do the step where you pulled out the extra water?

If these are rugs you can hang up, then hang them outside. After a few days, there will be no musty smell. For carpets, get as much fresh air in as possible. Air has ozone in it, a natural odor destroyer. A faster way to eliminate odors is to rent an ozone generating air purifier - the ozone chemically breaks down (oxidizes) the "stink" molecules. These machines work.

I have an ionizer and it works great!

I used baking soda on them and it fixed them right up.

What was the procedure?
