Hardwood flooring-checkered pattern
 

All, just want to see what people have done to sand a hardwood floor that is installed in a checkered pattern. The direction of the grain is different. I have sanded floors before and have always gone with the grain. Do I need to just use a small belt sander and do each small section independently? Thanks for any input.
