undercutting a fireplace?

I need to lay hardwood flooring around a fireplace. I guess I need to undercut an expansion gap. I really hate to drop $300 plus to do one small job. What are my options? Is this too specialized for a rental place to carry?

We took an old skill saw and cut the table down so it was only 7/8" from the other side of the blade and with a diamond blade set at 3/4 inches deep and made a cut across the front of the brick. We used a diamond blade in a sawsall to cut the sides. Then it chesled out ,well it was a pain but we got it done.

I just make a transition strip out of the same material the floors made of.
If you insist on under cutting just use a toe kick saw with a diamond blade.
It can be used standing on end and use a piece of scrap material the same thickness as the floor as a guide.

I agree on the saw but use a jamb or undercut saw , these saws would be ideal for your issue
