Default Wall in living room

I've got a question about the wall that faces my front entrance. My living room is really long. The wall opposite the front door was covered with panelling that someone painted before I bought the house. I'm on a REALLY limited budget, and was wondering whatg some alternatives were to ripping it out and exposing the plaster and lath beneath it.

You can leave it alone, rip it out, cover it with sheet rock, paint it again. The best thing is to remove it, fix the wall under it and be done with it. Sheet rock is cheap.

You could wall paper it. Fill the grooves with caulking or wood filler.
