Cracked Mortar Replacement for Top Course of Soldier Brick
 

Due to settling of my carport slab, the mortar between the upper course of brick (soldier brick) on the exterior load-bearing wall of the foundation has become cracked. I have stabilized the foundation with helical piles and cement.

Do I need to remove as much of the old mortar as possible before retooling with new mortar?
