Mudmixer: The plan was (and I think still is) to use 1 inch ID PVC plumbing pipe to fit into the core holes in the bricks. Greater strength (and greater cost) could be had with 1 inch ID iron plumbing pipe (but which would rust away in the ground eventually tho).

1/4 or 3/8 inch diameter plastic rods wouldn't provide much strength to tie the brickwork together.
