Greetings all,

I plan to face my front shed wall with real stone about half way up the wall to match my house.

Here are the specifics of the materials:
-- I have foundation footer already in place
-- Wall is currently plywood with roofing paper over it (portion of wall to be faced with stone is 12 x 4)
-- Stone is uncut (various shapes) about 3 to 4 inches thick (heavy)

My Dilemma ==>
Should I create scratch coat (with mesh) against shed wall and mortar stone TO the scratch coat. Or should I leave 1/2 inch gap BETWEEN wall and stone and use brick ties to tie stone to wall??

I see conflicting info out there. I see some that say to use a scratch coat, but at the same time they mention a weeping system. How can you have a gap for a weeping system if you're mortaring stone to the wall?

Any help is appreciated.

"Rainscreening" is the new standard up here where all siding has air gap between siding and sheeting. Have a look at this site.

Since I have been out there in the field, masons approach things differently.

To answer the original question,

Use the shelf you have for the natural stone with the brick ties. Make sure you have a flashing system installed behind the paper on the wall, and over the stones concrete ledge.
Also Make sure your brick ties go over the paper you have installed, and are fastened to a stud behind the paper, they will pull out of the plywood.
Also install some weep holes at the bottom course, and try to make sure non of your mortar gets piled up behind the wall. Otherwise the weep holes get plugged from the back.

A scratch coat is only used with cultured thin stone, don't use it.It's a waste of time and material.

I just did the skirting around my glass porch with natural stone(aprox.3/4-11/4thick) and was told by forums on the internet to use tar paper followed by metal lath and a scratch coat.Also to use s-type mortar.It turned out pretty good if I say myself.Iam planing to do the front knee wall of my basement also but have a few questions.Do I remove the styrofoam sm first or can I go over it with a the tar paper and mesh with the scratch coat?
