One thing I haven't seen to much of is shows that help with home additions. You always see a lot of shows on renovating, decorating, etc, but no home additions.

Hello Mena, and Welcome to the Fourm:
Additions should be built to compliment the existing home. That opens a real can of worms at times. The roof contours seem to be the greatest problem. So often, we see a flat roof on the addition that catches all the water from the existing roof along with the flat part; the water just can't drain away and causes leaks.
Each addition has to be as unique as the existing house.

Perhaps you could post some pictures of your house, draw a rough floor plan of the existing, and tell us what you want to add. Maybe we can give some hints based on that.

I've been contemplating on an addition and would probably have a ton of questions...
so which forum should I use when I get to it, since there is no dedicated one?

Hi, we added a new "great room" addition with back covered patio & front porch. Our contractor was a good "listener"...very important! I actually drew a picture of what I wanted & his carpenters did well in duplicating it. We're not DYI builders, but we did do a lot of the interior work ourselves. Saved some cost there. Are you doing a large addition...1 or 2 story? Ours was a one story area added to the side of our 2 story home....about 484 sq. ft. great room with a 14 ft. vaulted ceiling...& back covered patio is a 12x22. There's so much to do on just preparing the land for an addition...and connecting the new with the old part of the house. We dropped the additions roof line a bit. I believe we have a "hip" roof line. (not sure about the term, ha!) Too technical for us, ha! We love this new room...we used a wall of french doors on both the front & back...really is nice to sit in there... worth the cost! Living in Louisiana...it gets so hot in the summer, that it's nice to sit inside this air-conditioned room...feels like the outside is in w/o the heat,ha! Well, good luck with your addition.

Oops, forgot....be sure to check your air conditioner & furnace unit...we had to add an additonal unit to cover this added space. Check your electric box to see if you need to add more breakers, too. My advice...call in an electrician to check this all out. Hope I helped some.

I tell yah the best place for info on home additions is right here. You get real life answers to real life questions and from people who are doing that, been there or still doing it and pros who are in the business, but your right, not much on TV that covers this. Problem is to with TV shows they all work from a script but can be entertaining some times and you do see some clever ideas sometimes.
