I saw an attic-installed HVAC unit in a rental house where they just cut some members of the roof truss to make it fit. They could have made some attempt to patch the gap after installation but they didn't.

Yes, the trusses look like that but without the steel, our contractor thought they were some type of homemade truss. I will check at the city for the permit. Great idea. They may have not have had a permit since it is a small town and was built in the 70's but worth checking.

I've never seen trusses with out the steel joining plates, home built should have been sheeted with plywood but who knoows what they where doing 40 yrs ago.
