Joist Support Advice
Hello group! First time poster.
The back porch portion or my house appears to be a late addition and the floor system was built from 2x6 on 24" centers. The floor has sag and bounce. I've added extra 2x6 joists to reduce the 24" centers down to 12" centers, and added metal joist hangers to every connection. The joist system is laid out like this: HTML Code:
(exterior brick wall)The spans on the two exterior set of joists are around 77". The span on the interior set of joists is around 91". I'm looking for advice on the best way to add support under this joist system. The extra joists have helped reduce the bounce. Would concrete block piers (sitting on 24"x24"x24" concrete pad) under the two perpendicular "beams" suffice? How would you guys proceed? Thanks! |

Yes, the piers are the best bet for your problem. The vertical beams should have been double 2 X 10s but its too late for that, so reducing the span of the single 2 X 6s is the best bet. Glenn |

Thanks for the reply. Yes, when I first crawled under this portion of the house, I quickly realized they'd done this addition real quick and real dirty, and that I'd be the one doing the tough work to improve it. |
One more quick question -
What's the proper orientation of the pier block to the beam?
Perpendicular (block oriented across the beam) or Horizontal (block oriented lengthwise with the beam)? Many Thanks! |
Looks like perpendicular is the correct orientation.

Just as a personal preference, I would go with horizontal. It spreds the bearing over more area. Glenn |
