We have just purchased this house and have found the hand basin spout is leaking where it's connected to the copper pipe. Has anyone got any idea how to fix this problem.

You would typically have a compression fitting in this case. Use two wrenches to tighten it another half turn (one wrench to stabilize or 'back-up' one nut and the other wrench to turn the other nut.
