Recently after running copper pipe to a kitchen that is being remodeled my customer brought to my attention that the junction between steel and copper should have a brass coupling to prevent electrolysis. Yep, makes sense, I'm gonna fix it. But I was wondering just how bad a problem is this and what would be the downside of it being left this way?

Yep it's bad!
The steel will disappear and leaks will happen.
At least 8" of brass will take care of problems.

I see it often enough, and it just corrodes away.

And Redwood, where did you get your certification? I'm lookin to get mine but the lunatic school I wanted to attend...well, lets just say they made the news....sumthin about a rubber truck??

Lowes sells a coupler just for this. 1/2 - 1/2 copper for about $10 ea. Now the hard part... Remembering to get a few when I'm there next time!
