Default Reusing an older valve

So I have a 3" water line and I dug up a valve. It's older and has a little surface rust but it was made in America so I would like to reuse it if possible. What do you think? Here is a pic of it.ImageUploadedByHome Repair1407424394.715889.jpg

Maybe now, but I don't think it started life like that.

I work in a plant built around 1920. All our valves look like that. We change them when they quit working.

Chris, what would you say to your customer, when looking at this if this was his?

The op nut on this one is under an inch of rust. I bet I could have gotten it working but didn't want to waste the time. It still held without leaking.
