I just buoght the house this spring and have never seen this before. In the second bath (the one I don't use) I've been getting a lot of drain flies. I have tried keeping the tub plugged, the vinegar and baking soda foam suggestion, scrubbing as far as I can with a brush, bleach, and even used the tub for all my painting cleanup to poison the pipes. They keep coming back! Argh!

I'd call a pro, but I'm wondering what they will use that I can just buy myself if I knew what it was.

Sounds like the traps are drying out on your drain lines. You need to run some water in there once a week so the flys do not come up the drain. They could also be in the overflow vent line built in the tub , this is a bit trickier to fix. You may need to fog it.

Ahhh, I hadn't thought about the vent. That could be the problem. I'll see what I can do with that. Thanks for the tip!

one word, BLeach! you can also pick up enzymes for that will eat out the gunk.
