Default Apartment Gardening

We just recently moved into an apartment on the 13th floor of a complex and I would love to start a garden on my balcony. What are the best kind of plans for a poorly lit balcony?

If you like to cook, try herbs. They are easy to start, very hardy and incredibly tasty. If you have a good garden centre, they will be able to help you with what kinds will work for you and then you can decide what tasty treats you want. Enjoy!

Basil works very well in the conditions you are describing. I did it for years before I had a house and big yard and I loved it. Basil can go in everything!

I am lucky enough to have a fairly large deck. I grow anything I feel like growing. I grow any typeof flowers, even garden vegetables (potatoes, carrots and cabbage this year). As long as you have some good planting boxes, just let you imagination run wild and have fun!

I would like to do veggies in pots. I have done tomotoes & some herbs. Since I don't plan on digging up a spot in the yard, thought contaier growing would be a good idea. Hubby & I can only eat so much. I don't can. Tried freezing. So small scale is good for me. Can you pass along what you have done ? I would love to hear & to know Penny..

I'd love to know what you decided to grow.

I plan on doing some container gardening this summer. If I have everything in containers it'll be easier on me since I'm handicapped.

One of my challenges will be to keep the rabbits out of my containers.

Hi Needlepoint,

For your rabbits consider making a cage out of chicken wire or hardware cloth to keep them out. Here's a list of plants that rabbits tend not to eat.

Dear Newt,

Trust me, the rabbits will win.

I can't make cages. I have severe arthritis. I had real problems with my hands after I tried to make a basket.

I am hoping that the rabbit will munch on the azaleas and other stuff instead of my veggies.

I live in the country. We have deer, opossums, squirrels, lots of birds, rabbits, and snakes. Oh & we also have neighbors who won't contain their dogs. We also have an assortment of insects including dragon flies. I've seen an assortment of beetles, too. Among the birds in my yard are Mockingbirds, Robins, Crows, Goldfinches, and Cardinals. There is a flock of wild turkeys in my neighborhood, too.

Thanks.

Sorry to hear of your arthritis. If you can't get someone to help you bend some chicken wire, consider raising up the pots so the rabbits can't easily get to them. They will definately prefer your veggies over the azaleas.
