Default Apple Trees

When is the best time to prune an apple tree? And how do you go about pruning it? I have a very overgrown tree in my yard, but it has the most gorgeous yummy apples on it, and I don't want to hurt my harvest for next year.

Hi Mofinsky,

I realize you asked this a long time ago, but if you haven't found the answers you were looking for these sites should be very helpful. This first one has loads of info, including how to renovate old trees.

This site shows how to make pruning cuts.

See the section titled Pruning and Training in this link: http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/extension/homefruit/apple/apple.html

I am using their suggestions on two newly planted small apple trees. Don't ask why I never pruned the big apple tree that came with my house though...

Hi Luis,

Nice link. I've saved it to share with others. Hope that's ok.
