John Deere is the best, but then I grew up using their agricultural tractors and I know for a fact they are the best. As far as who makes the best mower engines I would have to say Kawasaki.

The big boys recommend the John Deer LA110 as a best buy but they also say the Chraftsman 28724 handles better and is easier to use for $50 less.
