Converting Old Coal Grate to Gas

I have a fireplace in my bedroom (in 180 year old house) that has an iron, raised coal grate. A gas line has been installed to the fireplace. My fears are that I am going to burn myself and the house up if I install a gas-replica coal insert. Putting in logs with an open flame would result in certain disaster, since it is only about four feet away from the bed. It looks nice, but can it serve any useful heating purpose?

No gas burning of any kind should be done in a bed room. Paul
