Hello Aubie and Welcome to the Forum:
I would check with the lumber yards in the area and try to find a Home Builder's Association. Home Builder's has education courses for their members and certifies the members at different levels. Their background and experience are factors in the certification process. The Yellow Pages are still a powerful source too.

The Greater Montgomery Home Builders Association (GMHBA) has a lot of resources and references http://www.gmhba.org/links.php.
Our purpose is to help and support our members, and we do so in various and continuing ways. We are the only professional trade association representing the residential segment of the industry and are considered one of the most respected organizations in the State of Alabama. Every business associated with the home building industry benefits from our endeavors. And, because dues include membership into the state and national associations, you support the initiative legislation that protects the industry at all levels.

Your association takes an active role in legislatively representing its members. We encourage our members to support the state and national political action committees who truly initiate positive legislation and oppose negative industry proposals.

Your membership can help improve your business through the information available in our local publications and those produced by State and National, and through the exchange of ideas at meetings, seminars and conventions. Therefore, we would like to encourage you to attend our monthly meetings.

The general membership meetings are generally held the first Thursday of each month at 5:00 p.m. with networking time for you to meet others within the association. Prattville/Millbrook meetings are held during lunch at the Catfish House the second Thursday of each month. Members may also attend National and State conventions, schools, seminars, and other educational programs.

We encourage members to take an active role in the Association, for with your cooperation, we can extend into wider spectrums and succeed to greater heights.

This website has been prepared to assist members in becoming familiar with the activities of our association. We have tried to cover all functional areas so if you take a few minutes to browse the site, you should have a working knowledge of what goes on at the GMHBA.

The Alabama Licensing Board issues contractor's licenses, gives contractors exams, and maintains lists of licensed contractors. http://www.genconbd.alabama.gov/Default.htm
The State Licensing Board for General Contractors was created through legislation enacted in 1935. The Board licenses and regulates commercial/industrial contractors in the major and specialty classifications that constitute the industry. Currently, there are more than 10,000 general contractors licensed to work in the state.

We maintain a staff of license specialists who are trained to answer inquiries concerning the licensing process and the current status of licensed general contractors.

Federal Employer Identification Number, FEIN

Every businesses or corporation must have a Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN), which is assigned by the U.S. Government assigned number. This number is public information and must be made available by the company. A FEIN identifies every company just like a Social Security Number identifies individuals.

Business Licensing

Every business, partnership, LLC, and corporation, who do business in a city, town, or state, is required to have license. Ask for the company’s business card. If the license number is not in the card, then verify it at the licensing office or at the Department of Trade and Industry.. Certain legal and medical professions require professional licenses which you should verify. Contractors must have a contractor’s license from the municipality in which they do business. See Business and Corporate Records By State

Private Company Background Check

If it is a small, private company, then find out who the owners are and run background checks on them. You can find out How to do a Company Background Check

Private companies are only as healthy as their owners, and maybe less so. So run a background check with criminal and civil records search on the owners, and simply ask for a financial statement (if it is not publicly available) so you can do some basic financial analysis. If you take the job, you are risking your economic future with them, so it would be worthwhile to buy an hour of time with a CPA (Certified Public Accountant) and have him review the financial statements with you.
