Default Installing bathroom exhaust fan

This is on a second floor - the space in the attic is tight so I want
to do this from below as much as possible. The instructions on
the new fan say to attach the housing to a joist. My problem is it's a
2x4 and I need at least a 2x6. Another problem is the 2x4 is
about 3" in, so I would like to add two 2x6's to the 2x4 to
bring the "joist" even with the edge of the drywall, so I don't have
a lot of drywall repair to do too. Can I do this? If so, what's
the best way to put in the new "joists" so that they will support
the fan properly?

Another problem is the wiring won't reach, so I have to add to
the wire. What's the best way to do this?

Finally, can I attach flexible ductwork to the duct connector?

Thanks!

Welcome Befo:
You can build up the 2 X 4 by using 2 X 6 blocks screwed to the 2 X 4.
Wiring splices must be made in a covered, accessible box.
Yes, flex duct will work just fine.

I'd run new/longer wire (if possible). That way you don't have to accomodate the "accessible" portion of the electrical code.
