Does anyone have experience refinishing the exterior of their log home?

Depends what's on there now -- paint? stain? wood sealer? What do you plan to put on? If it's paint, scrape off the loose stuff, wash off the dirt and then prime and paint it. If it's stain, clean it off and left it dry and then stain it again. If it's wood sealer, you're pretty much committed to putting on more of the same because other stuff won't stick well.

What we did was use bleach to bring back the natural clear colour (which we like) and then we applied CWF clear coat which is made by Flood Company this can be purchased at any hardware store. Then we went over the ugly concrete foundation with Cut River Rock you can check them out at http://www.cutriverock.com

I agree with the stone (of almost any kind) being used for the log home foundation. Concrete blocks just look out of character in that use.
Log homes have evolved through the years; some had creosote pressure treated logs, some had another wood preservative and some were just stained. I think there have been so many lawsuits over the log finish and the toxicity of them, that now they are shipped unfinished.
If you have one of the real old creosote houses, about the only thing you can use is another coat of creosote. Most of the others can be stained, or with a proper primer can be painted.

You can rent a "corn-media blaster" (they use corn cobs instead of sand to keep from damaging the logs) to remove your old finish and then apply new sealer, stain and top coat. Our log home was just sealed, stained, and clear coated last week. The current recommended product is made by Perma-Chink Systems, Inc. Their website is http://www.permachink.com. My son is planning to use this to re-finish his log home that was completed in 2002.
