there is a bedroom on right. when you come out you must almost step on the stairs. very dangerous, any ideas would be appreciated.

Someone messed up when they built that wall. It needed to be taken down and moved at least 36 to 48" back from the stairs and a railing added

Looks like there is a chimney in the way.
You may be able to take that chimney out and use a direct vent on your unit being used in the basement.

yes, there is a chimney on the right of door. probably can't remove. my son can't really afford a new furnace

You might not need a new furnace, just a power ventilator. And it fixes your problem.
Otherwise , I see no other options....yet.

I don't see a fix for that other than moving the stairs some where else.
