Default very new to gardening

I am super new to gardening.. I planted hibiscus, tulips, and irises and the hibiscus and tulips have bloomed. The irises are just getting started, and I have all this ugly unruly grass growing w/ all of the flowers! Today I have been yanking all the grass out, then sprayed w/a grass killer. The question I have is this: Should I cover all the ground w/ new soil and churn it around some, or wait till the grass dies?

Hi Julie,

Welcome to the wonderful world of gardening and the bane of every gardener - weeds! Not sure why you would cover the ground with new soil unless you removed some. I would wait until the grass dies and then dig out the grass, being careful to get as much of the roots as possible and wear gloves to protect your hands from the chemicals. I find it's best to weed within a day or two after a rain or a good watering. Be sure to mulch the flower bed and dig a shallow trench around the bed so the grass from the lawn won't invade so quickly. See 'Dropped-lawn edge' here.
