I am replacing two outdoor light fixtures that are controlled by two switches. The second one was connected to the first one by a very thin, 3-connector(?) flat cable which is also being replaced. The first light when replaced by itself worked, but when I turned both switches on it now stops working. The old flat cable did not have colored wires, didnot help me with how the two lights were connected, except the middle wire was wired around the cable itself, or not used. How do I make sure I have them connected right and both to operate?

You somehow switched the traveler wires with the hot it sounds like.

If you have a known good ground, an extension cord, an incandescent test light, clip leads and an ohmmeter you can figure out each conductor regardless of their colors, but it is methodical and tedious.
With three way switches you have to watch out for Phantom Voltages.

Confused.
Two switches that both control the two lights. That is the two light come on and off together.
or
Two switches that independently control two lights.
The mystery cable runs between the lights or the switches?
Tell us how you have it hooked up now and what is happening.
