ceiling fan wiring
 

hello has any sparky come across a brn color wire coming from the ceiling while wiring a remote cont ceiling fan. i always thought black hot green ground and white neautral and sometimes red another hot if fan and light are controled seperatly. I have a new fan has 1 blk with white stripe 1 blk 1 white
but in ceiling coming out and only a 3way switch i have blk wht grn and a brn
what is this brn ? if it was meant to be a hot it should be noted in this 80s home
The brn wire was wired to the blue light wire of old fan

Conduit wiring?
Probably a second switched hot from the switch box so the fan and light can be controlled separately.

You can check what it is with a multimeter and incand. lamp and a known good ground. It's tedious but methodical.

Pull the switch and see where it goes.
