I replaced an electrical outlet that was bad (which caused a good portion of the circuit to be turned off). This particular electrical outlet has two wall switches to allow the lights to be turned on/off.

I installed the red wires in place under the black wires. However the outlet stayes LIVE no matter what I do to the wall switch!

Do I need a special type of electrical outlet to handle switches?

Do I need to replace the wall outlet switch. Am I installing this incorrectly?

I'm not exactly sure what your saying here but, I think if you take a look at the outlet that you removed, the hot side of that outlet had the bridge tab removed.
This bridge effectively makes the outlet two separate plugs.
One portion (top or bottom) will be constant hot and the other portion "switched" hot.
To fix this problem, unistall the new oultet, remove the bridge tab on the hot side of the outlet and reinstall the outlet based on the way the original outlet was wired.
Be careful because right now you are backfeeding power to the switch.
