We just moved into a home which has two separate light fixtures over a combo sink/island setup.
We bought a new light fixture to give us more light. The problem is that the two original fixtures are not centered with the island. The new light needs to be centered to work.

Question is: what do I do to fix the problem?

What kind of light do you have now and what kind of light have you bought? Do you have attic space above or finnished rooms?

Your best bet would be to use a new one that hangs on a chain, then you just hook it up where one of the old light where and swag it to a hook where you need it. You can get a decrative cover for the other one.
If that dosn't work come on back.

You'd have to move one of the boxes and eliminate the other.
Either way, a lot of work.

I'd get two separate smaller pendants as opposed to that one big fixture.

First, let me congratulate you on your good taste in lighting fixtures. The old ones suck.
Second, if you know how to do the drywall work and minor electrical, you could relocate the ceiling box to the proper spot. If not, a slight swag might be your best and simplest bet. Depends on your skills and your time contraints.
