Long story short, I'm looking to buy an 1880 house built of thick brick, fieldstone foundation. Through the front door into the main room two brick walls have been removed, one to a greater length than the other, and the longer beam is sagging. I'd like to add two support beams (disguised as columns I guess) that would rest upon the foundation through the floorboards, to bring it up to FHA code (two on one side, hopefully; shorter span isn't sagging, but...) Does anyone have any idea how much it would cost me to have it done (must be contracted out)? I'm afraid that between that, wiring issues (knob and whatsit; don't think it's going to pass) and the uninsulated, see-through attic, I fear I'm going to run out of funds before we can do some other things that have to be done. If anyone has any thoughts or can direct me to the right forum I'd be greatly appreciative. Hate to pass on it, but if I'm swimming too deep....
