As long as you can get the source water turned off, you should be able to remove the shaft.

Burning punky wood or ants won't hurt anything as long as the wood isn't wet (the punky wood
will stay spongy way longer than regular wood will). I'd just make sure to keep it all outside
until ready ...

Have an old GE 24" that was original to our home (around 30 years old), picked up a 27" GE off
