My deck does not have one and I have had no issues with it so far. Mine is a higher deck off
the ground though so I don't know that it needs it.

Just a second story deck. You can go out it from the main floor of my house, but you can't
access it from the back. The basement of my house goes out to the back with the deck overhead.

I have used a pressure washer before, but you do want to be careful. This can damage your deck
even more. You do not want anything high powered. When in doubt, use the hose ;)

5 years does sound too soon, but I would say that it would depend on how well maintained you
have kept the deck. If you have neglected it, then it is possible to start seeing this wear and
