It might not be too difficult if you have the right equipment and time. Just make sure you're wearing a ventilation mask--the dust from varnish can be pretty nasty.

I agree with Joe--there's something to be said...
I agree with Joe--there's something to be said about renovations that are for your own enjoyment and benefit, rather than a future seller's. Maybe it's about finding a balance between the two.

You can mix some gray or other dark color paint...
You can mix some gray or other dark color paint with either paint thinner or water and "rag it on." Just use a rag to wipe it on the frame, then wipe off excess.

add a little white vinegar to your rinse?
I like gcintegrations's answer, but would go very easy on the soap. Adding a tiny amount of vinegar to your rinse rag will help avoid water spots.
