Sprayed the Buggers
universalremodeling, My dad sprayed the bugs w/bug spray (I believe the bug spray was for termites). I don't know if that worked: haven't asked him if he has seen any bugs lately.

Update - Radiant Heating in the Ceiling
Mustered up the courage to dig (literally) deeper into this. The radiant heating system is indeed copper pipe. As previously mentioned, the material around the pipe came down like sand as I poked...
