I really don't want to deal with hanging new drywall, so hopefully I can come up with some other alternative.

The fan is definitely moving (at least some) air. If hold a piece of heavy TP up to the vent, it'll hold it there (or sometimes, almost hold it there). I'll probably call the paint manufacturers...
