heat pump goes into retard

My split unit heat pump run fine for a day or two then it stops cooling and goes into retard,I will turn it off and turn it back on and it runs fine for a few more days and goes out again..any idea...

Goodman 3 1/2 ton heat pump

Ran across an elderly couple with this goodman heat pump,they said they haven't used it in almost 2yrs,because it was costing them $800 per month to run it.any ideas to what's wrong..

It's programed for heat pump,it will work fine...

It's programed for heat pump,it will work fine for a few days ,then it starts again,to the point where I can't get any of the controls to work,the batteries must be removed to shut the unit off,

The power I'm getting to the unit is 24v to the contactor they energize,but no 240 from the disconnect which has no fuses.

I have a central a/c that's not coming on,contactor energize on a call for a/c,but nothing outside,not getting 240v to unit? Just a guess bad breaker or no..

Removing the compressor looks to be the best way to get to the bad spot,does that spot need to be cut out or just sodering it will work.
