I hope this is in the right forum, if not, I apologize...but here goes...

On the front of my house, I have a cement step leading to my front door. I am planning on put a deck type step, using composite materials instead of the cement step. I am wondering If I need to remove the old cement step, or can I build right over it?

Also, if I have to remove it, what is the easiest/best way to remove it? I am worried about damaging the foundation of my house while removing the old cement step.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. When i get home tonight, I will take some pictures of the step, which will maybe better help you understand what I am talking about.

Thanks!

Hello Vikeologist:
Steps should be of even height to keep from tripping or throwing the back out. If you can build over the existing step, will it still be the same height as the step above and below it? If so, go for it.
To safely remove the defective step you could use an electric chipping hammer.
