Can anyone explain how step flashing should be installed at a roof-wall junction? Are the individual pieces supposed to be sealed to each other? To the roof deck? To the shingles?

Also, what is the advantage of step flashing compared to a continuous length of flashing?
 
Take a look at this video and some of the others in this location. The roofer is irritating but you will see the step flashing install at 1:50 into the video. Depending on the roof elevation, step flashing sheets the water progressively off each shingle which is not possible with a continuous piece of metal.

Thanks CallMeVilla. I along with, I;m sure, a lot more had this same questions. While I deal with gutters and other situations, this has come up. The video was nice.
